I'm Not a Romantic

No, I’m not a romantic. Not the slightest bit. That’s a difficult confession for a romance writer to make on Valentine’s Day, but it’s true.

Another confession: I’m not easy to buy a gift for on Valentine’s Day. The usual offerings of wine, candy or flowers don’t work for me. I don’t drink. I’m diabetic. And the cats eat flowers which necessitates our putting them on the top shelf of the closet. Hard to enjoy them there.

Fortunately, my husband is a romantic—how lucky am I? He constantly amazes me with gifts I never would have thought of. My favorite? A pair of peach-cheeked lovebirds, beautiful creatures who cooed and cooed and rubbed beaks. They also fought and tore the paper on the bottom of their cage into thin strips they threw on the floor and intimidated my parakeet in the other cage. I guess lovebirds must be the predators of the small bird category.

But I loved the thought and they were, truly gorgeous.

What was your favorite Valentine’s Day gift, either to give or to receive?

Your blog got me to thinking - and I guess I'm not a romantic either, though I would like to be. Maybe this is why I write mysteries instead of romances. I'm diabetic, too - but that doesn't seem to stop me from eating candy. Wish I could get rid of that sweet tooth.

My favourite Valentine gift was to get a wife who doesn't agree with Valentine's day!

My daughter gave me a self-made heart today!

One year my husband gave me a card that said: "Happy Valentine's Day to my best friend" with a sweet note added about love and friendship. I'm not sure everyone would think that romantic, but it brought tears to my eyes.

Kay--Sometimes being a diabetic is the pits, right? I do love chocolate.
Ian, I love your comment! I can tell you're a real romantic.
Beate and Sandy, you do know what the best gits are.
Thanks to all for leaving comments!

Loved the post, Jane. Romance is in the eye of the beholder, like beauty. My husband has a wonderfully funny sense of humor and my favorite Valentine present was a poem that is still making me laugh after 30 years.

Carolyn--How good to hear from you! As you suggest, the most expensive gifts are not always the most romantic.
