Nothing better than a guy in a cowboy hat ... except maybe a guy in a tool belt. :)
I love, too, what Stone said about the poor fella who got himself killed when he was supposed to solve the mystery. While it's frustrating when a character gets away from me and starts doing his/her own thing, I love it too, cuz that means they've become more real.
JoyceJoyce Lambhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16136225603309264187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632249142954767681.post-61459249152318294002011-06-16T14:26:39.368-04:002011-06-16T14:26:39.368-04:00Thank you again, Leigh, for the wonderful job you ...Thank you again, Leigh, for the wonderful job you did and for setting up this blog. Nothing but flash-and-dash, in-your-face blaring noise and images that offer no clue as to what the picture itself is about. As if all that incoherent imagery is what's needed to sell a film nowadays. I remember when trailers even for the most action-packed movie gave you insight into the storyline.

Which is one reason why I seldom go to movies anymore. That, plus the fact that theaters have become little more than glorified shoeboxes - and I so fondly remember the real moviegoing experience. Would much rather wait a few months and watch a film on DVD, where I can skip the oft-times "obnoxious" Coming Attractions. Not to mention often congratulating myself on not wasting the 30 or so bucks on seeing the thing at a cineplex.Stone Wallacenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632249142954767681.post-6528129445060759602011-06-15T17:04:11.898-04:002011-06-15T17:04:11.898-04:00All Hollywood seems to offer lately are special ef...All Hollywood seems to offer lately are special effects, rehashing past glories, and doing a very bad job of making real movies.Leigh Verrill-Rhyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05768398558019474096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632249142954767681.post-1682052383390767032011-06-15T16:59:26.940-04:002011-06-15T16:59:26.940-04:00. . . Granted that was always an offbeat sort of Western, but the movie "remake" was so bad that it's critical and box office failure momentarily slowed the upwards momentum of Will Smith's career, and with good reason.

Remakes in general are usually disappointing. And IMO remakes of classic television programs are especially bad: Witness "Bewitched", "The Honeymooners" - sacrilege! Again, Hollywood is in definite need of originality.Stone Wallacenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632249142954767681.post-9857615705775858782011-06-15T15:44:39.744-04:002011-06-15T15:44:39.744-04:00Bring back Rawhide and Gunsmoke - but no remakes! ...Bring back Rawhide and Gunsmoke - but no remakes! You've sure made me feel welcome and I'm appreciative. Special thanks to Leigh who asked some terrific questions and even prompted me to think" out some of my replies.

Howdy Loretta - Yep, that would be great if Avalon expanded its horizons. They produce a handsome product which any author can feel proud of, but it's a handicap if the distribution is so limited. I would love to see some paperback sales, which would pretty much ensure bookstore distribution of our titles. I was lucky enough to secure a large print purchase for "Montana Dawn", but again the distribution there looks limited to online and libraries. Bottom line: Potential readers have to know your book is out there, and as I said, in my case at least, there's a certain myopia among the media when it comes to the unavailability of books in brick-and-mortar establishments.

Howdy Jaye - Thanks for the kind words. Yep, those days when "gold" flows from the keyboard are the best moments of the creative process. Doesn't always happens and those flip-side days can really be downers, but, as I've found, as long as you remain persistent, don't get discouraged, and stay disciplined (oft-times the most difficult part) the "magic" always returns.

Howdy Abigail - Well, as I said, it was never my intention to kill of the psychiatrist in "Child of Demons". Again, that's when the plot just seemed to twist on its own. Put me in a bit of a quandary since this turn of events happened at just past the halfway point of the story and left me struggling to come up with a new solution. Which I did: relying on the story's most unlikely character to become the "hero", such as he was. But it worked out well as readers were as surprised as I was.

Howdy Sandy - Again, it's a real pleasure to be among so many fine people and fellow writers. A good group, to be sure. I surely do hope that the popularity of Westerns takes an upswing. It's a pure genre, IMO. Be it film, television or literature, I find Westerns to be the most satisfying form of entertainment.Stone Wallacenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632249142954767681.post-86810630651689517482011-06-15T14:53:54.981-04:002011-06-15T14:53:54.981-04:00Since Blogger isn't cooperating, Stone is goin...Since Blogger isn't cooperating, Stone is going to send his responses to me and I will relay them on to you all. As a writer, I think what keeps me coming back to the page are the days when I know 'gold' flows from the pen, and these days, from the keyboard. I spend a little time getting to know my characters with pre-writing and those pages don't appear in my stories. For the most part, that's all backstory stuff, but it's a necessary stage for my writing method. I'm a plotter but only in that I have a certain structure to each scene and the scenes create an arc through the story. Each scene must have a purpose, a reason for it to be in the story. Once that is established, the words usually appear on the page with little effort. That's when the magic happens for me and I'm often surprised at what my characters say or do. Loved getting your take on your writers life.
