First Friday Question
Posted by
Elisabeth Rose
Avalon authors are quite an international mob now. The majority are of course from the US but we have authors from Canada, the UK, Australia and Germany. There may even be more countries represented. I have invited the Avalon authors to drop in and tell us where they come from. Perhaps they could answer some questions for us. Do they set their stories in their own country? Is the language different writing for the US market?

Free Story - CHANCE ENCOUNTER

Tessa McDermid
Maggie hesitated at the doorway. From inside the room, she could hear a loud rumble of voices. Just as she turned to head back to her car, a woman stepped into the hall.
"Good morning!" She beamed at Maggie. "Are you a visitor?"
"Umm." Maggie didn't know how to answer. "I'm here for my boss, Jim Hamilton. His son has a school program this morning."
"Oh, then you're a sub. Come on, we'll get you signed in." She wrapped a hand around Maggie's arm and led her into the room, effectively stopping her escape.
People stood in small groups, laughing and talking. Maggie took a breath and let it out slowly, trying to calm her heart rate. "It will be good for you," her boss had told her the day before, after she'd said she didn't want to go. "I need someone to cover for me at the meeting and you need to get out and meet people."

Interview with Heidi Ashworth

What prompted you to become a writer?
When I was seven years old, I wrote a little story and read it to my mother. She was very encouraging about it, which made me feel special. Since I am one of eight children, seven of them girls, and one of a pair of identical twins, “feeling special” didn’t happen very often. I guess I just wanted to pursue that feeling. It was a way for me to stand out, a talent on which one of my many older sisters hadn’t corner the market.
What part of writing do you find most satisfying?
I tend to write character driven stories rather than plot driven. I love it when the characters take on lives of their own and inform me what is going to happen next. When people respond to that and enjoy these characters, it’s very satisfying. It’s almost as if the people in my books are my children. I’m very fond of them.
